Introduction

My name is Roland Kahn, and I'm a second-year undergraduate student in the Public Leadership Scholars program at the University of Maryland. You can reach me at rkahn123@umd.edu, and my intended majors are public policy & music performance.

I grew up a 20-minute drive from campus, in Chevy Chase, and have lived in Maryland all my life. I always suspected I might attend UMD, as it is an apt fit for my interests. I've had a pretty eclectic mix of hobbies/interests throughout my life, I hoped I could attend a school that could cater to all of them. I've played cello and guitar throughout my life, and have enjoyed and learned profusely from the music program/faculty in College Park. I have an equally strong interest in government and how the decisions that dictate the world are made, so I have likewise been engaged with the Public Policy program and selected PL as my first choice scholar's program. A career related to politics is especially feasible in these turbulent times, and the potential for sustainable income could allow me to pursue music simultaneously (which tends to me sporadic/gig-based). The scholar's program has encouraged me to advocate for myself and step up when no one else does.  However, it has equally reinforced practices such as active and attentive listening, considering multi-faceted issues from all perspectives, and democratic/citizen leadership. I hope to continue to develop presentation, writing, and collaborative skills in Public leadership and at UMD in general.
